POSITIVE GUIDANCE TECHNIQUES

Who doesn't want to see their children show good behavior?!  The practice of setting limits helps children learn boudaries and guides them on making good choices and displaying acceptable behavior.

When helping children learn about behaviors and choices, using positive guidance techniques can go a long way in creating a good rapport with the child and building their self-esteem.

These four techniques can create a good impact and positive influence on children:

  1. One Big Message: “We accept and care for you, but your behavior is not accepted.”
  2. Emotionality:  Tone of voice, facial expression, word choice.
  3. Setting Limits:  Protects child from their poor judgment and impulsivity at this age.
  4. Giving Choices:
    1. give the kids less to resist against
    2. make the adult less of an obvious “bad guy”
    3. let the child feel more empowered
    4. allow for something acceptable for the adult
    5. allow for a distraction away from something unacceptable
