If you’re a child care professional in Washington State, you know the end of the year means more than just parties and champagne toasts. It means your 10 hours of STARS training need to be completed. Yikes, how many more days left??? Fear not, we’ve got you covered!
And don't worry, we'll report your completed classes to MERIT quickly, too! Keep in mind, they don't need to be in your account before Jan 1 to count toward your current year requirements.
What do I need to do?
As a licensed child care provider, you will need to complete at least 10 hours of approved continuing education each year. Washington training requirements pertain to:
- All family child care providers
- Directors, program supervisors, site coordinators and lead staff in child care centers and school-age programs
Child care aides, assistants, substitutes and volunteers are encouraged (but not required) to participate in ongoing professional development training opportunities. Learn more about the licensing requirements for each program by visiting DEL’s Child Care Licensing Rules page.
If you are just getting started in child care, you’ll also need to meet initial training requirements, although these have a different time requirement for completing. Additional health and safety requirements for facility employees, including CPR/First Aid certification, HIV/AIDS Training, and TB test, are required as well. More information can be found on the DEL’s Child Care Licensing Rules page.
What is the deadline for the annual training?
You will need to complete your 10 hours of annual training by the end of the day on December 31 (11:59pm). Your classes DO NOT need to be in your MERIT account at that time for the hours to be credited toward the current year’s requirement. Your certificate of completion will show the completed date so you can verify your studious efforts to complete your training!
Since our classes are all online and available immediately after ordering, you can tackle this task up to the bitter end, although we might suggest a wee bit sooner so you can still enjoy ringing in the New Year! ;)

What happens when I'm done with my classes?
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the holidays!
We'll report your completed classes to your MERIT account for you. Keep in mind, your classes DO NOT need to be in your account before Jan 1 for you to receive credit for the current year. Your certificate of completion (available at any time on your account dashboard) shows the date you completed each class.
Now, here’s the best part: After working arduously to complete your training, you can get reimbursed for your classes! Wouldn’t that be a nice bonus to help pay those holiday bills?! Get all the details on DEL’s Training Reimbursement page.
You may also be eligible for financial incentives to reward the educational achievements such as degrees, certificates and credentials. For more information, read DEL’s Professional Development Achievement Awards page.
Whew! See, completing your training isn't so bad. Just a few easy steps and you're on your way, even at the last minute...so procrastinators, we've got your back!
To all our valued friends and dedicated child care professionals, we wish you a joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year! Thank you for all you do!
